His mother, Joyce Marie Roberts, was a single teenaged mother.
After attending Indiana University, he worked during the late 1980s as an aide to Tom Bradley, the mayor of Los Angeles.
Smiley became a radio commentator in 1991 and, starting in 1996, he hosted the talk show BET Talk (later renamed BET Tonight) on Black Entertainment Television (BET).
As the story goes, many in the black community either turned on or tuned out Smiley when he persisted to publicly challenge, criticize, and correct President Obama for not putting forth a "black agenda." While Smiley has argued that his critique of the president has been rooted in principle and based on his love for black people, many black Americans still aren't buying it.
In their opinion Smiley's critiques are nothing more than insincere verbal attacks that stem from envy of President Obama and too much love for himself and his own legacy.
Listeners couldn’t understand why Smiley was speaking out against a man who could be the first black President. The Smiley family moved to Bunker Hill, Indiana, when Smiley's stepfather was transferred to Grissom Air Force Base.At home, Smiley suffered from poverty as well as from physical abuse by his stepfather. Two years later, she married Emory Garnell Smiley, a non-commissioned officer in the United States Air Force.Smiley did not learn the identity of his birth father until many years later, and he has never publicly revealed his father's name.
